{"id":68,"date":"2010-04-19T08:53:49","date_gmt":"2010-04-19T13:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sperrysoftware.com\/Blog\/?p=68"},"modified":"2021-11-19T15:54:24","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T15:54:24","slug":"three-things-you-dont-want-to-do-when-emailing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sperrysoftware.com\/Email-Tools\/three-things-you-dont-want-to-do-when-emailing\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Things You Don&#8217;t Want To Do When Emailing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There are really more than three things that we can think of to not include in an email &#8211; but these three top the list in terms of frequency or severity.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> In no particular order, these are what you should not do in an email\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t type when you&#8217;re angry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Typing while you&#8217;re still angry is no different than having an argument where the other person is not talking back &#8211; it&#8217;s not going to end well.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Usually it&#8217;s best to cool off first\u2026get a bite to eat or just wait 24 hours before you allow yourself to respond and when you come back, you can present a clear and logical presentation of your view.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t gossip about co-workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This rule could really be generalized to something like &#8220;Don&#8217;t put anything in email that you wouldn&#8217;t want your priest\/rabbi\/cleric to read.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, stay away from non business matters because you don&#8217;t know who is reading your emails (besides your recipients) in an office environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t put anything you don&#8217;t want to become public<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Ask yourself this question before hitting send:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What if everyone were to read this?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would it spell legal or moral issues?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>If you have any doubts, it takes just a few seconds to pick up the phone or go have a face to face meeting with someone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 11pt; margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>As an aside, our Safeguard Send tool can be used to catch some of these occurrences by looking for, and flagging you when, phrases like these appear in the email: &#8220;I am so pissed at&#8221;, or &#8220;I probably shouldn&#8217;t be telling you this but&#8221;, or &#8220;Are we even allowed to do this?&#8221;.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Find out more about Safeguard Send at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sperrysoftware.com\/Outlook\/Safeguard-Send.asp\">http:\/\/www.SperrySoftware.com\/Outlook\/Safeguard-Send.asp<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; \u00a0 There are really more than three things that we can think of to not include in an email&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-68","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-uncategorized"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.7 (Yoast SEO v27.7) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\r\n<title>3 Things You Should Never Do When Emailing<\/title>\r\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"There are certain things that should not be mentioned in work emails.
